An Interesting Tidbit About the Word “Remodel”

Time to pull out the good ol’ dictionary and do some research, folks!

So often, we go about our days on a bit of autopilot. Do this, do that, plan this, pay that. Talk, text, email. Listen, respond … or avoid for now (am I right?!).

And every once in a while, something stops us, and makes us think deeper. We had one of those moments at the recent NARI Milwaukee Remodeler of the Year Awards. Jodee Benavides, Business Development Manager from Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Vice President of the NARI Milwaukee Foundation was the night’s EMCEE. He began the evening by sharing his research into the etymology, or origin, of the word “remodel.”

The word is comprised of two parts – “re” and “model” – which in and of itself is not earth shattering news, but there is more. “Re” is the easiest to comprehend: it means again, anew or once more. Redo. Rewrite. Reheat. Reenvison. There are an endless amount of things we can revisit to do again or make new. The base meaning of “model” had some meaning that we hadn’t ever pondered. “Model” means to measure, to give advice, to heal.”

We think that’s so cool! While most days we’re out helping homeowners choose new roofing, siding, windows, insulation, gutters and more … sure: we’re measuring. Sure, we’re giving advice. But it’s nice to take a look at a higher level and consider that our daily actions are helping homeowners to “heal” their homes. Sometimes the healing is structural and provides better protection of the elements. And sometimes the healing is cosmetic; vastly improving curb appeal. Oftentimes – it’s both!

So today, while you’re out on autopilot, doing your daily work – we challenge you to look at the bigger picture. How are your minor actions making a greater impact? Are they? Can they? While we fully get that our “healing” is not doctorate-level … sometimes a new roof or improved insulation is exactly the medicine your home needs.

Thanks, Jodee and NARI Milwaukee, for the inspiration!
