What to Do After a Tornado or Severe Weather Affects Your Home

Featured, Storm, Tips

Storms can be fun to watch, but their enjoyment ends when one causes damage to your roof or home. We hope this never happens to you, but if it does, it’s best to be prepared and know what to do after a tornado or severe weather affects your home.

From your home’s roof to siding, windows and more, we offer advice on what to after a tornado or severe weather hits.

Remember that the safety of you and your family outweighs that of any property or material possession. So if you believe your home has incurred damage, first be certain that the storm has passed entirely before assessing. Then, mitigate! Protect against any further damage as safely as possible, as it is your responsibility as an insured homeowner. Take lots of photos, carefully remove any debris and place tarps over any exposed areas to prevent further damage.

Contact your insurance provider and review your insurance policy – what coverages and endorsements you have, such as roof replacement cost coverage, the many details of hail coverage and how long you have to file a claim or get work completed. Get as detailed as you’re able because the insurance claim process is nuanced and can be confusing. (Your agent, if you have one, or your insurance adjuster can be a great resource!)

Your insurance company may have companies that they work with for mitigation and restoration, but YOU, the homeowner, can choose which contractors work on your home. Not sure who to hire? As exterior home improvement experts, we can help you with roofing, siding, windows, doors, gutters, insulation and more. We also have a list of partners we can recommend beyond what we do that we collaborate with frequently, most of whom are NARI members. You can also check the member directory of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), too. The MOST IMPORTANT thing is to hire someone local, and avoid storm-chasers: they’re out there after every storm, beware! (See the column at right for tips on how to choose a local contractor.)

Our process begins with clear communication. We know this can be a distressing period, so we work alongside you and your insurance company to guide you step by step to a brighter tomorrow. Because every storm is different and every project unique, our office and sales teams work together to ensure all materials and specifications are checked and double-checked in order to get the job done right the first time, no matter what Mother Nature threw your way!

Damage from a storm or tornado may include:

  • Hail damage to roof, siding, gutters and windows
  • Wind damage to roof and or siding
  • Cracked or shattered windows
  • Door damage
  • Sagging, leaking or broken gutters
  • Missing railings, planks or other damages to deck

The most important thing to do after a tornado or severe weather affects your home (after removing debris and securing the home to prevent further damage) is to be sure to hire a local, reputable contractor and avoid storm-chasers.

Here are some easy ways to check to see if a contractor truly has local ties:

  • Do they have a local address? How long have they been operating out of that location?
  • Are they members of any local associations like NARI, BBB or Chambers of Commerce?
  • Look at the license plates on their vehicle(s). Are they Wisconsin plates? If they are a local business, their vehicles should have WI plates.

Many storm chasers literally do that – follow storms around the country, set up temporary “offices” where weather damage has occurred, rush trusting homeowners into signing contracts… and then quickly skip town for the next storm. Checking the items above can help protect you from potentially getting scammed and being victim to shoddy work with no warranty.
